Title: “Behind the Wall”
Offered for a donation of: $50

Artist’s statement:

“In 2012 I had the opportunity to visit Punta San Juan, Peru, thanks to a donation to the Akron Zoo's Conservation Fund. I've been a zookeeper for over ten years and have spent a majority of that time working with a colony of 20 Humboldt penguins. Volunteering at PSJ for two weeks gave me the experience to work with these birds in the wild! Words can't describe the experience of seeing hundreds of penguins lining the beaches, swimming in the ocean and guarding nests.

The title "Behind the Wall" comes from the wall that surrounds the Punta San Juan reserve area. It helps protect the penguins (and fur seals and sea lions) from predators and the negative impact of humans. Because this kilometers-long wall has been meticulously maintained for years, it allows PSJ to be home to the largest breeding colony of Humboldt penguins in Peru.

Giving back to those in need is one of the most important things a person can do, even if they aren't directly tied to the organization. Everyone needs help at some point in their life and everyone needs good karma.”
